Most washers that will not drain have a clogged pump filter, a kinked or blocked drain hose or a weak drain pump. Many will not spin while water remains, so a drain fault often looks like a spin fault. Unplug the machine, close the tap, check the hose, and clean the pump filter if your model has one.
A washing machine that stops with a drum full of water, or leaves clothes dripping wet, is one of the most common appliance problems. The good news is that many causes are simple. Work through these checks in order.
If the machine will not drain
1. Check the drain hose
Make sure the hose is not kinked behind the machine, crushed against the wall, or pushed too far into the standpipe. A hose that is raised too high can also stop water leaving. Straighten it and try a drain or spin cycle.
2. Clean the pump filter
Many front-load machines have a small access door at the bottom front. Behind it is a filter that catches coins, hair pins, buttons and lint. Slowly unscrew it with a tray underneath, let the water out, remove the debris and refit it firmly. This is the most common fix.
3. Check the household drain
If the standpipe or bathroom drain is blocked, water cannot leave even when the pump works. Run water in the drain and see if it empties normally.
4. Top-load machines: the lid switch and pump
On top-loaders, a faulty lid switch can stop the cycle, and a weak pump or a broken coupling can leave water in the tub.
If the machine will not spin
1. Reduce or redistribute the load
Heavy items like towels, jeans or a single bulky blanket can unbalance the drum. Modern machines detect this and stop spinning. Redistribute the clothes, avoid overloading and try again.
2. Check that water has drained
Most machines will not spin until the water has gone. If the drum is still wet, solve the draining problem first.
3. Door or lid lock
If the door does not latch fully, the machine will not start or spin. Check for trapped clothing, a damaged latch or a worn door seal.
4. Belt, motor and bearings
On top-load machines a worn or slipped belt can stop the spin. Loud grinding, burning smells or a drum that is hard to turn by hand point to motor or bearing problems that need a technician.
What error codes mean
Codes vary by brand and model, so check your manual. In general, drain-related codes point to the pump, filter or hose; door-related codes to the latch or lock; and unbalance codes to the load. Note the code and tell your technician. It saves diagnosis time.
When to call a technician
- You cleaned the filter and hose and it still will not drain
- The pump hums but does not move water, or makes no sound at all
- Water leaks from the bottom of the machine
- Burning smell, smoke or tripping power
- Loud grinding or banging that does not stop after rebalancing
- The door will not unlock after the cycle
Do not force a locked door while the drum holds water.
Prevent it next time
- Check pockets for coins, tissues and hair clips.
- Use the right amount of detergent. Too much creates suds that confuse sensors and clog hoses.
- Clean the pump filter every few months.
- Level the machine so it does not walk or vibrate.
- Leave the door open after washing so the seal dries.
